The Marathon that Never Was

Disclaimer: I received a race entry to the Oakland Marathon to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to review, find, and write race reviews!

This last weekend I was supposed to run my 21st marathon, but that never happened. As the whole running community already knows, races have been canceled all the way through April and even into May. My most recent race was the Napa Valley Half Marathon on March 1st. I was supposed to run the Oakland Marathon on March 22, have a week off and then do a race every weekend throughout the month of April and into the first week of May. Sadly, all of these races have been canceled.

As much as it would be easy to be upset about all these canceled races, I am choosing to look at the bright side for many reasons:

1. Many races, such as the Oakland Running Festival, did a great job of keeping the runners informed of cancellations.

2. Many races, such as the Oakland Running Festival, allowed runners to either run at a postponed date or run virtually. The Oakland Marathon’s postponed date is set for August 30th. Runners can also choose to run virtually by following this link https://oaklandmarathon.com/virtual-run/

3. Canceled recess is the least of many people’s worries as many are without jobs right now. I and my husband are both blessed to have jobs in which we can work from home and still receive paychecks during this time. We are both blessed to have jobs that do not require us to be on the front lines of this pandemic such as many doctors, nurses, grocery store workers, truck drivers, etc. Thank you front line workers! ❤️

4. Although many races are canceled, running however is not canceled. If you’re reeling from canceled running events, check out the free Uncanceled Virtual Race Project by Run the Edge.

Although I’m bummed to have missed my 21st marathon, there is much to be thankful for. Oakland Marathon, I will see you in the future.

I hope you are your family are staying safe and healthy. Until next time,
