The Race That Never Occurred

Disclaimer: I received a free entry to the Hallowine Run (formerly known as the Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon) as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador), and check out to review, find, and write race reviews!

If you’ve watched or read any news stories lately, then you know that once again, there are wildfires raging in California. One of these major wildfires is the Kincade fire which broke out at about 9:30pm on Wednesday, October 23rd. Due to intense winds and dry vegetation, the fire was fast moving, erratic, and difficult to contain. Sadly, by Thursday afternoon, all runners received notification that the Hallowine Run had been cancelled.

Although I was super bummed that the race was canceled, there are a few things that I am grateful for:

  • The Race Director, Matt Dockstader, made sure to keep all runners up-to-date and informed. By Thursday morning at 8am, the following message was posted on the race’s Facebook site, “Just a heads up we are monitoring the situation in Geyserville very closely. Currently awaiting updates from our contacts at CHP. As soon as we have anything we will be sending out an email to all registered runners, as well as posting to our social channels.”
  • The expo still occurred in Santa Rosa’s Historic Railroad Square from noon to 6:00pm on Friday, October 25th.  All exhibitors and vendors demonstrated their support by going to the expo. There were exhibits, product sampling and demonstrations, fun runs, food trucks, music, a raffle, games and more!  Registered runners were able to pick up their race shirt, wine glass, medal and even race bib if desired. Wine and beer tasting was complimentary for all registered runners and $15 for others (includes wine glass).
  • I found a local race to run Saturday morning in place of the Hallowine Run and ended up placing in my age group! (It was a small race. 😂)
  • A college event in Berkeley I was suppose to attend with my 17 year old daughter after the Hallowine run was also cancelled due to the fire. This, however, allowed us to attend a friend’s pumpkin carving event.

In the end, I still had a fun day filled with running and Halloween fun! I’ve ran the Hallowine Run in the past and will run it again in the future. I hope you’ll run it with me in the future too!

As for all of those who have been evacuated and the first responders, I’m praying for your safety and well-being.
