It’s Okay to Step Back—Here’s Why

Have you ever set big plans for yourself, only to realize that what you really needed was rest?

That was me last week. I had just gotten back from a trip to Mexico. I intended to be productive. I planned on catching up on podcasts, writing blogs, and getting ahead on my to-do list. But you know what I did instead?

Nothing.

And you know what? That’s okay.

The Power of Taking a Step Back

We live in a world that glorifies the grind, where rest is often seen as weakness. But here’s the truth: stepping back doesn’t mean giving up. It doesn’t mean you’re not committed to your goals. It means you’re honoring your body and mind.

For runners—whether you’re training for your first 5K, half marathon, or full marathon—this is a lesson worth remembering. Maybe you’ve hit a training slump. Maybe your body feels off. Maybe your motivation is wavering. Instead of forcing yourself to push through, what if you paused?

Rest Is Part of the Training Process

Think about it: running isn’t just about resilience; it’s also about balance. Your body needs time to recover. Your mind needs time to reset. Training isn’t just about the miles you log. It’s about listening to yourself. It’s knowing when to push ahead and when to take a breath.

Here’s what I want you to remember:

  • Resting isn’t quitting. Taking a break doesn’t erase the work you’ve already put in.
  • Recovery makes you stronger. Giving your body time to heal helps you come back with more energy and endurance.
  • Mental breaks are just as important. Running is as much mental as it is physical. Burnout can derail progress more than a missed workout ever can.

Your Goals Will Still Be There

If you need to step back, step back. If you need rest, embrace it. The miles, the training plan, the goals—they’ll still be there when you’re ready. And when you return, you’ll come back stronger.

So the next time you feel the pressure to always be moving ahead, pause for a moment. Ask yourself: Do I truly need this right now? If the answer is rest, give yourself permission to take it.
